My Computer Won’t Turn On…
I am often called because a clients machine won’t turn on for no apparent reason and it is often something very simple that I can fix over the phone. If this were to happen to you then try taking these steps before giving your IT contact a call and see if you can fix the problem yourself!
- Check the power cables are securely in the computer and monitor (might seem simple but you’d be surprised
) - If the monitor has power but the computer doesn’t then try swapping the cables. It might be something as simple as a fuse that needs replacing.
- Remove the power cable from the computer and leave it out for 5 minutes. Then plug it back in and try switching the machine on.
- Unplug everything from the computer (including the keyboard, mouse and monitor cables) but leave in the power cable and try switching it on. If this works you will then need to hold the power button in until the machine turns off. Then plug in the monitor, mouse and keyboard and see if that works. Process of elimination follows, if unsure consult your IT contact.
- If none of the above work the next step is to open up the machine. This will be too advanced for most users and it would be best to contact your IT contact. If you do wish to continue yourself then read on…
- Remove / Disconnect any internal hardware that is not essential, including CD/DVD drives, Modems, Network Cards, TV Cards, Floppy Drive, Zip Drive, USB/Firewire Expansion Cards. Then replace the computer cover and try to reboot the machine. Ensure the Power cable is disconnected from the machine during this process and it is advisable to wear an anti-static wristband to avoid damaging any of the hardware.
- If the above works you will need to replace / reconnect each component one by one until you find the faulty piece of hardware. It might have just been a loose cable or device and therefore replacing it securely will fix the machine.
I hope that helps. If you are unsure of any of the above please contact your local computer specialist to resolve the problem for you. If none of the above works then you will also need to seek further advice from an expert.
Obviously there has to be a disclaimer with this, that we can’t be responsible for any problems that may arise while performing any of these steps. We are offering some assistance to those that are wanting to try and resolve issues with their computer themselves but if you are concerned about performing these steps please contact a professional to do it for you.
Happy Computing!
