Google Labs : Trends

December 3, 2007 – 4:45 pm

I came across a nice little tool today by Google Labs which allows anyone to look at the different search trends entered into Googles Internet Search Engine. You can enter a number of different search terms and and compare the search trend history. It is quite interesting to look at how different terms fluctuate and how some have changed quite significantly over the last few years. It is also a useful tool for any website administrator working hard to optimise their site for search engines.

Just to show how it works I have created a search that shows the trends for “vista, iphone, apple, Linux, virus” and here are the results from Google Trends :) This shows quite a steep drop in the search for “Linux” and a gradual incline for “apple”. Maybe a more sensible search would be for windows, apple, linux, mac.

A use for website administrators would be to see when seasonal search terms start to become effective – here I am looking at the terms “Christmas, Easter and Holiday“. They may be fairly trivial but depending on the business you can change the terms to what is relevant and useful! Maybe this is what dictates when internet companies turn their sites Christmassy! :)
