Windows XP on the Go Slow
Many clients are contacting us at the moment about their computers going slow, and often this is due to lack of memory that was installed when the machine was bought. But there are some steps that you can take to ensure smooth running of your machine.
I came across this excellent article on the Microsoft site today that talks about restoring your computers performance.
Most if not all of the suggestions can be completed by any user willing to give it a go! The article talks through how to:
- clear out old programs
- free up any wasted space
- running a defrag
- disconnecting unused mapped network drives
- and for the more able, how to remove/stop un-required start-up programs.
Obviously there has to be a disclaimer with this, that we can’t be responsible for any problems that may arise while performing any of these steps, which is why both Brandstar, and the author of the article recommend you doing a backup before performing any maintenance on your machine, in case the worst happens!
It is from experience that we have found things often get worse before they get better, so if you are performing these steps at a time when things seem to be as bad as they can get with the machine…be prepared for the possibility of a fresh install!
If you would rather we took a look at it for you then get in touch with us to book it in, or if you have tried the steps and have got into trouble then give us a call to arrange for it to be sorted out.
